Merger of Hydel High and Cumberland High takes effect tomorrow with new name

The merger of Hydel High and Cumberland High in St. Catherine will create a new institution, to be renamed Hydel Cumberland High School.

The official naming of the new institution is set for Monday morning, when the new academic year begins.

The now defunct Hydel High, had been private at inception but transitioned to public, under government control, in January 2026 in the face of longstanding debt and other serious operational headwinds. Concerns had also been raised about the structural safety of some of the buildings at Ferry, off Mandela Highway.

The Ministry of Education confirmed in June that Hydel would be consolidated with Cumberland High.

Last week, parents had expressed mixed reviews about the merger, with some raising concerns about mounting transportation costs while others cited a safer learning environment as reason to support the move.

    1. It’s a heart-breaking situation, let us continue to pray for the family, it can’t be easy.
