Charles declares support for including members of deaf community in decisions affecting them

Minister of Labour & Social Security Pearnel Charles Junior has declared that members of the deaf community must be included in decisions that affect their lives and shape their future.

Mr. Charles made that assertion while speaking at a Jamaica Deaf Village (JDV) expo in Shooters Hill, Manchester recently.

He said the contribution of the deaf community is essential to Jamaica’s future and that its members deserve respect and that his ministry is committed to removing barriers that prevent members of the community from achieving their full potential.

“There’s a place for your talent in our parliament. There’s a place for your talent on the field. There’s a place for your talent in the schools. There’s a place for you to achieve and to contribute to Jamaica’s economy and to our national development. Those of us entrusted with leadership must do our part to make those opportunities accessible.”

He added that young people should be able to “move from school to training, from training to employment, from employment to greater independence with the support needed at each of those stages.”

The minister also reminded members of the community that the Jamaica Council for Persons with Disabilities provides access to funding for adaptive aids.

“The Ministry of Labor and Social Security, the JCPD; we will continue working towards a Jamaica where inclusion is not something we talk about. It’s something that can be seen, that can be felt, and that can be experienced. We want a truly inclusive Jamaica where no person is left behind.”

He encouraged those who have not yet done so to register with the Council, noting that registration can also provide access to assistance following natural disasters.
