Two 16-year-old siblings have been arrested and charged after they allegedly assaulted a 14-year-old girl on a bus in Spanish Town, St. Catherine, leaving her unconscious.
The teenagers have been charged with assault occasioning grevous bodily harm and unlawful wounding.
Reports indicate that about 4 p.m. on Monday, the complainant was travelling on a Toyota Coaster bus in the Spanish Town bus park along at Burke Road when a dispute developed between her and one of the accused.
It is alleged that the accused told the girl she was being loud on the bus, leading to an argument.
Senior Superintendent Hopton Nicholson, head of the St. Catherine North Police, said that the situation reportedly escalated with both accused allegedly punching the girl all over her body before she fell to the ground and lost consciousness.
“Now this dispute led to a physical confrontation where it is alleged that another male student got involved in this altercation. The female student received several injuries and was transported to a medical facility where she received treatment and she’s also expected to undergo further treatment based on the nature of her injuries,” he reported.
The police say the girl is reportedly suffering swelling of the brain, internal bleeding, bleeding her eyes and a fractured nose.
The accused were later taken into custody and charged.
SSP Nicholson urged the public to resolve disputes in a non-confrontational manner.
“We just want to use this opportunity to implore students, adults, all citizens, to try and address your disputes in a non-violent manner. I also encourage adults to try and intervene when they see students having dispute in public spaces. That child could be your child, that child could be your relative, so we implore you to just intervene as best as practicable so that we can prevent incidents like these,” he appealed.
