Police probe ABM robbery at Scotiabank in Portmore

The St. Catherine South Police are continuing their investigation into the theft of an undetermined sum of cash from the Scotiabank automated banking machine (ABM) servicing room on Braeton Parkway in Portmore, St. Catherine on the weekend.

Investigators believe the break-in occurred sometime between 3 p.m. on Saturday and 8:43 Sunday morning.

When contacted by Radio Jamaica News on Monday morning, Commanding Officer for the division, Senior Superintendent Leighton Grey, said there was no update on the investigation at this time.

It was reported that a security guard was patrolling the compound of the bank when he discovered that the access door to the Scotiabank ABM servicing room was open.

Investigators reviewing surveillance footage reportedly observed several men, dressed in black, arriving at the location in a grey Nissan Latio sedan, with its licence plate obscured.

The men allegedly entered the servicing room and used security access codes to open four ABM safes before removing an undetermined sum of cash.

Preliminary investigations showed no signs of forced entry.

It’s understood that access to the servicing room is restricted to specialist staff from Beryllium, the company responsible for servicing the machines, while banking staff do not have access to the area.

Investigators have also determined that only the cash cassettes, containing the larger denominations, along with the cassette holding US currency, were emptied.

Each safe is reportedly capable of holding more than $20 million.

The suspects were reportedly wearing gloves during the operation.

No comment has been forthcoming from Beryllium or Scotiabank on the incident.
