A trip to Spanish Town ended in a costly nightmare for a St Catherine man after he lost his wallet and later discovered that more than $300,000 had allegedly been drained from his bank account.
Detectives assigned to the St Catherine North Police Division are now investigating the case as one of unauthorised access to computer data and fraud.
Reports are that on July 16, the man travelled to Spanish Town to conduct business. However, upon returning home, he realised that his wallet was missing.
The wallet reportedly contained $40,000 cash, an ATM card, a driver’s licence and other important documents.
The man reportedly retraced his steps and made checks in an effort to recover the items, but was unsuccessful.
He later visited a branch of the National Commercial Bank (NCB) to obtain a replacement ATM card.
While there, a customer service representative reportedly informed him that several transactions had already been carried out using his account.
Investigators say the transactions included the purchase of cellular phones and a withdrawal of $50,000 from an ATM in Spanish Town.
In total, $346,000 was allegedly stolen from the man’s account.
The matter was reported to the Spanish Town Police, who have since launched an investigation into the fraud.
