Transport Minister says rural school buses will be ready for new academic year

The government says it is closely monitoring the readiness of the rural school bus service ahead of the reopening of schools in September.

Transport Minister Daryl Vaz says more than 90 per cent of the fleet is expected to be operational when the new school term begins.

The update comes amid concerns from Opposition Spokesperson on Transport Mikael Phillips about the maintenance of the buses.

Minister Vaz said a summer repair programme, led by the El Hydro team, is under way to address outstanding maintenance issues and ensure the buses are fit for service.

He noted that all 111 buses in the fleet were included in a comprehensive maintenance programme.

Currently, 81 buses or about 73 per cent of the fleet are operational. Another 20 buses are undergoing repairs while 10 have been earmarked for more intensive repairs and replacement of parts.

Minister Vaz said several of the buses now being repaired are expected to return to service before the September reopening.

He said the heavier maintenance work is being done during the summer break because it is more difficult to carry out while schools are in session.

Minister Vaz said the government’s priority is the safety and welfare of students and that every bus placed into service must be properly assessed and fit for purpose.

The rural school bus service was launched in September last year and currently transports thousands of students daily. The government said the programme has provided safer, more reliable and affordable transportation for students in rural communities while easing transportation costs for many families.
