Minister of Labour & Social Security Pearnel Charles Jr., says the ROOFS programme will cost eight to ten billion dollars more than the 10 billion which was initially projected.
The programme was designed to help the victims of Hurricane Melissa whose homes were damaged or destroyed.
The government has already assessed 113,000 persons but only 43,000 of these have been verified and $9.5 billion has already been paid out.
The minister, speaking Tuesday on Radio Jamaica’s Real Business, said another 70,000 are awaiting verification and more money will therefore have to be requested from the ministry of finance.
