Vice Chairman of the National Road Safety Council, Dr. Lucien Jones, is again appealing to motorists to slow down and practice defensive driving techniques.
His appeal follows several fatal collisions, including two double fatal crashes in St. Ann and Manchester.
The St. Ann incident, which happened about 6:20 p.m. on Tuesday, involved three vehicles – a white Toyota Corolla motor car, a white Toyota Probox and a white Toyota Voxy.
The victims, a man and a woman, have been identified as Joel Treasure, a lifeguard of Bamboo, and 37-year-old Cordia Walters, a bartender of Salem, Runaway Bay.
It is reported that a Toyota Corolla, with three occupants, was travelling eastbound towards Runaway Bay at high speed when the driver lost control of the vehicle and slammed into the front section of a Toyota Voxy that was travelling in the opposite direction.
Two other people died in a motor vehicle collision on the Prospect to Downs main road in southern Manchester on Wednesday morning.
Phillip Beharie and Meldon Knibbs were killed when a Honda Vezel motor car attempted to overtake another vehicle and collided with the motorcycle on which they were travelling.
Additionally, Dr. Jones noted that the death of a pedestrian on the Sandy Bay main road in Clarendon on Tuesday evening has been attributed to excess speed.
“The failure to control excessive speeding is the number one reason why people continue to die needlessly on our roads. And therefore, this issue needs urgent attention and strong advocacy from every sector of the society and not just with safety practitioners alone,” he appealed.
It’s really sad to hear about the loss of those brothers. I wonder how their family is coping through such a difficult time.
