Detectives assigned to the Kingston East Police Division have laid charges against 32-year-old Moya Shaw in connection with the death of her baby.
Ms. Shaw, who was taken into custody last month, was charged on Thursday with the offence of infanticide. Investigators reported that the incident was committed on April 18 about 9 p.m. at a house in Rockfort, Kingston 2.
It was reported that Ms. Shaw, a mother of six, was at home with two of her children, including her four-month-old, when she allegedly threw the child on the ground multiple times, resulting in head injuries.
It’s alleged that she then wrapped the child in a towel, placed him on a bed, and left the premises with another 18-month-old child.
Residents alerted the police after the body of the child was found inside the house.
A missing person report was generated, and on the following morning residents called the police to say that the female was seen attempting to harm a small child along Orange Street in Kingston.
The police responded and rescued the child and brought both to the Admiral Town Police Station.
However, Ms. Shaw later ran out of the station.
The Child Protection and Family Services Agency (CPFSA) was engaged on this matter.
Ms. Shaw was subsequently located in the St. Andrew Central Police area. She was taken into custody, interviewed, gave a confession statement and was later charged.
Ms. Shaw is scheduled to appear before the St. Andrew Parish Court on June 1.
