The Police’s Agricultural Protection Branch (APB) is a warning livestock owners that they could face prosecution and have their animals impounded if they allow them to graze illegally and on residential or private properties.
The warning comes as the branch sets up enforcement against the practice following a recent operation in St. Elizabeth where officers impounded cattle valued approximately $1.6 million.
The joint operation was conducted last Wednesday by members of the APB Area 3 team and the St. Elizabeth Municipal Corporation.
During the operation, eight heads of cattle were impounded.
According to the APB, residents have consistently raised concerns about illegal grazing and uncontrolled cattle in the parish, citing damage to agricultural investments and private property as well as risks to public safety.
Stray cattle have reportedly caused significant crop damage in some areas, resulting in losses amounting to millions of dollars for farmers.
The Agricultural Protection Branch is reminding livestock owners of their responsibility to properly secure and supervise their animals.
The police say livestock found grazing illegally will be impounded and owners may be prosecuted where warranted.
