St. Thomas Police vow to crack down on aggregate truckers who breach safety rules

Police in St. Thomas are promising to increase enforcement against drivers and owners of trucks found transporting aggregate in a manner that obstructs roadways and poses a danger to other motorists.

The announcement was made by Commanding Officer for the St. Thomas Police Division, Deputy Superintendent Rohan Ritchie, during last Thursday’s monthly meeting of the St. Thomas Municipal Corporation.

DSP Ritchie said the unsafe transportation of building materials such as sand, stone and marl, was one of the major concerns raised by the Municipal Corporation shortly after he assumed command of the division.

He said there have since been marked improvements in how truck operators transport aggregate along public roads but conceded that the problem has not been completely eliminated.

He vowed that the police will continue to educate drivers and truck owners, while stepping up enforcement to ensure operators properly secure their loads and keep public roadways clean and safe.

The St. Thomas Police Division says motorists can expect increased road checks and ticketing in the coming weeks as part of the renewed enforcement drive.
